What’s different now? You get increased respect, even deference, for your point of view. And the fact that you show up for something means so much to people. I keep thinking, “I’m the same person who came to your event last year!” And women are over the top on this thing. They are so excited. And fathers of daughters come up and say, “I want my daughter to meet you because I want her to know that anything is possible for her.” That’s the icing on the cake.

Plans for next year? I’ve communicated to my colleagues that safety and soundness are our issues–the safety of the American people and the soundness of our economy.

Do you feel responsible for forging the message? I’m a Catholic, so I’ll assume all the guilt if we don’t have a message.

Will you stand up as a liberal? When people criticize liberals, what do they mean? Is it support for civil rights that is a code word down South? I think the events of the last couple weeks should put that matter to rest as to where the American people are.
