Fatal Frame, also known as Project Zero in some regions, is a Japanese survival game that uses a camera called Camera Obscura to fend off restless spirits. The series often had struggles with Western localizations, which led to the games’ late Western releases. Last year, Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, which is the fifth game in the franchise, became available for all consoles and PC after being Wii-exclusive since 2014.

The Western localization of Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse was initially canceled. But now, fans could soon get their hands on it once it drops on March 9, 2023 worldwide. The game follows amnesiac Ruka Minazuki as she and her two friends, Misaki and Madoka, explore Rogetsu Island to seek out the truth of why they were held captive on the mysterious island. Ruka will have to use her flashlight to navigate through dark mansions and abandoned hospitals, and the Camera Obscura to fight hostile ghosts she will encounter.
Players can get special DLCs when they get the game. They could choose between the Standard and Digital Deluxe Edition, which includes the Rogetsu Isle Dinner Party costume set DLC and a digital art book. They could also download a Marie Rose Outfit from Dead or Alive for Ruka from the digital copy before March 22nd. Meanwhile, those who pre-order the game before the release date will receive limited-edition Fox Mask costumes and the Spirit Stone Flashlight Hat.
Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse was received well when it first came out in Japan in 2008. Many game reviewers praised its unsettling atmosphere and gameplay, which added a spine-chilling touch to the experience. With Fatal Frame titles getting remastered versions, players will have no problem navigating through Mask of the Lunar Eclipse with more modern controllers and consoles.
While waiting for Mask of the Lunar Eclipse to release, fans can replay previous Fatal Frame games to refresh their memories on the franchise’s complicated story and family connections. It’s also a great time to revisit the horror elements and see whether they hold up compared to more recent games in the same genre.
Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse launches on March 9, 2023 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X|S.
