Sure, they’d love to catch a glimpse of Oz icon Ian Thorpe, who many believe will break his own world record in the 400-meter freestyle Saturday night. But true swimming aficionados settle for a peek at the rumored “fast pool.” This pool has great karma for the Aussies. In it, Thorpe broke the world record in both the 200- and the 400-meter freestyle during Australia’s Olympic Team Trials....

Thomas Haining was 19 when he shook his three-week-old daughter Mikayla Haining in June 2017, inflicting “catastrophic and unsurvivable” brain injuries, the BBC reported. The baby girl died shortly afterwards at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness, Scotland, prompting an enquiry led by Police Scotland’s major investigations team, police said. Haining, now 21, had been charged with murder but prosecutors accepted a guilty plea to the lesser charge of culpable homicide at the High Court in Edinburgh on September 11....

The grandmother told a reporter with the Charlotte-based WSOC-TV her 2-year-old grandson and his parents were visiting her at her home when the incident occurred Sunday evening in Gastonia, the largest city in Gaston County located west of Charlotte. David Buck, 67, shot his son Chad, 43, with a handgun on Christmas Day after an argument escalated into violence in Waterloo, Iowa. Officers arrived at the 1300 block of East Airline Highway after receiving reports of shots being fired, according to a statement from Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Deputies, according to KWLL. Deputies determined that two adults had been arguing when the altercation occurred, leaving one man injured from a gunshot wound....

Jimmy Hoffmeyer, the girl’s father, is suing the school district, a librarian and a teacher’s assistant, alleging that the girl’s constitutional rights were violated. The suit also alleges there was racial discrimination, ethnic intimidation, intentional infliction of emotional distress and assault and battery, MLive.com reported. Hoffmeyer said that a teacher had cut the girl’s hair to even out the differing lengths a couple of days after a classmate cut her hair on one side, the AP said....
